It is nearly 40 years since Bayleaf was dismantled and
brought to the Museum, and numerous people have contributed to its success
as an exhibit. Raymond Wood drew up the plans and marked the timbers for the
dismantling, which took place in the winter of 1968-9. Several of the
founding trustees of the Museum, notably Museum founder Roy Armstrong and
its Honorary Architect, John Warren, were involved in the planning of the
reconstruction. Roger Champion carried out the repair work. Museum Director,
the late Chris Zeuner and the current Museum Director, Richard Harris, have
been involved in its subsequent interpretation and presentation for
visitors. Cynthia Bacon carried out a pioneering documentary study of the
‘Bough Beech houses’, and this has since been taken forward by the late
Marjorie Hallam and Gwen Jones, whose full report we hope to be able to
publish in due course.
